Deficits, debt and doubt surround us. Suffice it to say friend, that’s what choosing to be apathetic, even ignorant of what was going on in and around your State Capitol and our nation’s Capitol has created.
This could well be a strange twist of circumstances, but given rising public deficits and debt, we no longer have the option of protecting the stats quo. Whatever or whomever is ultimately responsible for our current circumstances, we are forced to tackle these twin challenges head on. Fixing these problems begins by saying the word “no.”
Politicians haven’t seemed to enjoy using this combination of letters for awhile have they? Although it looks like because of this red alert, “no” may be making a bit of a comeback in some of the most unusual places. Take Albany, seat of power of the Empire State. Although Governor David Paterson is yet to be elected outright by his voters, he sent a message to the General Assembly, union bosses and the press last week when it was announced that he’s not interested in raising taxes to cover a possible 14 billion dollar budget shortfall. Bravo Mr. Paterson!
The governor’s courage sends a signal, ‘No way,’ we must look to reduce our costs because high spending has simply worn out long suffering taxpayers. Cutting costs are another pair of words we never hear from appropriators, but change is here, and maybe its for real. Let’s hope so. Although Governor Paterson cannot physically see the economic storms he knows how to stand up and diffuse one.
Governors all around the country may be the driving force to send the example and the message to the Oval Office that our taxpayers have had it, we’re broke and we want government at all levels to do what we do at home-reduce costs, freeze programs and do more with less.
I congratulate Governor David Paterson for starting something that is long overdue. New York is going to attempt to run our government like we operate our own homes. All we need is to create a common enemy and common goal and Americans will get excited and experience amazing results.
